The gear shift lever is not a good way to tell the differance. When Allis was making improvements to the WD {New Transmission} many were sold with the new transmission {Curved Shiter} with the WD engine. After more improvements were made to the WD one being larger engine Allis renamed the WD the WD45. So, the later WD's and the 45's had curved shifters.
One way to tell is the oil filter housing. The WD had one line coming from the bottom and aways down the line it tee'd off. The WD45 has a tee right under the housing the almost makes it look like two lines come out of the bottom of the filter housing.
