Very high liklihood that it still has the original 6 volt starter. Most guys didn't change it when converting to 12 volt, but it does engage the ring gear more aggressivley with 12 volts, and some would say cause premature wear of that gear. 6 volts still works if you use very heavy cable from battery to starter and have very clean connections. Starter doesn't care if it is pos or neg ground either.
