You don't need any hyd dipstick because it's not precise like for engine oil. When you look in the opening (engine off) you want enough to cover the lower part of the highest gears, and not so much that it spills out the top when it's expanded through heat.
Don't assume it's a lemon. You always expect to have some problems in exchange for a major cost savings.
