1300D just rebuilt---won't run more than a few minutes

I just had the crank rebuilt to standard. I had someone I know rebuild it. He got new bearings and other parts. Although I believe he didn't get new rods and compression rings. It probably didn't need them. Put it back together and it wouldn't run. Had the fuel plungers redone and put back in timing and it now runs for only a few minutes and acts like it gets a big load on then puffs black smoke and dies. It is getting plenty of fuel. Just can't figure out why it does this. PLEASE HELP if you know the problem.
