Before you refill it you should check and clean the filter. There is a 3-hole plate on the side of the transmission, near the front at the bottom. As I recall, you want to remove the one on the left side (I might be wrong, it's been a while since I did mine).
The manufacturer called for JD303 or equivalent hytrans oil. It is the fluid for your hydraulics as will as the lube for the gears. It is a fairly clear fluid--yours might have been ok.
That dipstick you found measures the depth of the fluid.
