It doesn't show milky until there's at least 1% water in the fluid, more than you'd expect from condensation. Was it out in the rain, uncovered? No damage in the sense of breaking something, but water invites wear and rust.
No need to pay. The problem is that it doesn't drain 100% like engine oil. Just repeat what you did a couple more times. If you let it sit for a day in a clean pail the water will separate to the bottom, where you can suction or drain it out and re-use.
