I would definitely want a temp gauge on a YM1700. I do a lot of cutting in high weeds and the chaff clogs my radiator screen quite often, but I can tell when the gauge starts to rise that it's time to stop and clean the screen. A temp light coming on would be too late, especially on a 1700 with no water pump, unless one has been installed.
