Sounds over-simplistic, but could the range selector have been bumped into a neutral position? This can happen without being very obvious. (it has happened to me!) Also, check to see that the shifter linkage is working properly, and that the clutch pedal is engaging the clutch,that the clutch is not stuck open (yoou can check that by engaging the PTO drive).
