Al, Gel is what sometimes occurs to diesel fuel when in cooler weather (we have had those 30F nights and some a lot cooler here in RI) the fuel thickens up and actually forms (or perhaps I should say percipitates out) a gelatin like substance that stays gelatinous even at 60F +.
Air filter was first thing I checked as I had replaced it last fall and is the no. 1 usual suspect in diesel loss of power situations (in my limited experience). Loss of power was quickly becoming stumbling and hesitation as the engine had less and less fuel available (I ascertained by examination and discovery of the clogged filter)and by the time I had backed into garage the ignition hesitations were becoming increasingly prolonged and pronounced, i.e. the engine was stumbling.
The fuel currently in the tank had already run the tractor for about four hours so I have not tried that. I guess I will do that next.
My old mentor would have flown in an unbelieving rage from his eternal rest in his TDB and justly murdered me if I were to have tried anything as boneheaded as starting a diesel without all the filters in place, so No, I didn't try that.
Yes, I know Dubba's dad did fight in the big 1, Number Two (and vomited on the Japanese PM, but that was later) and that Dubba was too busy to take a chance that his Texas NG unit might go into harm's way in the Vietnam theatre. Dubba sure isn't his dad. Dad had a lot of clues and a fortuitously placed sewer pipe to the rescue.
I have twice ordered the Service Manual from the nearest Yanmar dealer, in Somerset, Mass but she hasn't ever called me to say it is in.
