Hi Danny and Bruce, it seems to me that Bruce is right in the fact that, the owner's manual is way off in it's capacities.
I did double check myself and continued to put more oil in until it registered correctly. I even put a couple of extra quarts in, overfilled it, drove it around for ten or fifteen minutes, let it sit for five and then drained the excess off, and found it did give up some more little metal shavings.
I guess with these overseas yanmars that have been used in Japan and other places, it's a good idea to flush repeatedly, the trans and engine of fluids. I've been changing my oil, every hour or two, and it's made a big difference in the end. For example, when I first drained it, it was black. An hour later, it was black, changed it again and two hours later it was black. Now I'm up to three and half, almost four hours of use and no signs of the oil being black.
My John Deere will go ten hours or so, before she dirties herself..:-) Four cylinder seventy horsepower diesel pig.
My Beast Whale-Pig International, she'll go seven or eight hourse before she dirties herself.
So, Now I'll let the oil go ten or fifteen hours in the yanmar, before I change it, oil is cheap and I sleep good at night, knowing, her oil is honey colored.. I know that diesel's dirty up the oil up relatively quick, in relation to a gas engine, changing the oil is fun for me as well. Any type of interaction with my tractors, is fun. Laughing, hope I'm not the only sick one out here..
John Deere is a four cylinder and takes eight and a half quarts, International is a six cylinder turbo and uses twenty two quarts, what a fat pig she is.
My yanmar uses around three and a half quarts, almost four. I buy the oil by the case in six one gallon containers. Needless to say, the International really hurts your pocketbook, but I still change her oil, every twenty hours or so..
I gave up motorcycles and took up tractors and am loving every minute of it. Thanks again guys and happy tractoring to you all.
PS, I live on two acres, it used to seem so big and large to me when I'd walk it, now it's sooo small.. I guess you need like 750 acres, to just drive around on, climb some hills, mashing over weeds and unwanted seedlings. I don't farm, just ride them around drinking my soda and enjoying every second of it.. Got Tractor ? :-)
