Sure, it's nickel-welded routinely. But at those temps you might want to first remove the block (and test it after welding). In which case you might want to first look for a replacement engine or just a block, and get it rebuilt before installing, and you'll have a new engine for similar work and money. Or there's a new outfit called stitchnweld or stichnweld or somesuch that claims to fix block cracks without high temps.
