Rental tips then. A big chipper (say 100 HP, mechanical feeding into a 12" opening) will be so heavy you'll have it transported unless you have a heavy truck with a pintle. But getting the blades out and sharpening them is a job, so better to let the rental place be stuck with this.

Get instructions on clearing a jam in the outflow chute, and don't feed anything until it's turning full speed. Have a crew on hand to feed it, and assign one person to stand by the intake ready to disengage if something (or someone) gets caught. Don't let any metal or stones get fed in or they might hit you for new blades. Like inspecting a rental car on pickup for dents, you might ask to see the blades, and ensure they're sharp and have no nicks.

Find out how to refuel and how long the tank lasts, and if you think it will take longer have a supply on hand. If there's a meter on it and you pay for a 24-hr rental, find out if that means an 8-hr work day or if you can run it up to the 24 without paying extra.

Get everybody work gloves and ear plugs.
