It it aint bad then there's the remote possibility that the gauge is. Even more remote, as in never seeing one fail...would be the cam drive gear.
Percentages are very high the cable is broken, and as to the original question:
Remove tachometer cable from gauge, and gently tug with needle nose pliers...if the cable comes out, it's broken.
