Hi, we just purchased an 1850 Oliver with a 354 Perkins at an auction sale. Good starter and runs good. But, we found out after we got it home that it's spewing liquid (either oil or diesel) out the exhaust. Also, the oil level has been going up since we bought it. I was told by one guy that the fuel lift pump is probably leaking diesel into the crankcase, which would explain the oil level going up. But how is liquid oil or diesel getting into the exhaust? It does smoke when running, a nice little bit of gray haze.... Nothing that I would consider excessive though.. (We also have a MF 1100 that has a 354 perkins in it as well, which was rebuilt about 150 hours ago, so that's what I have to compare to)
I'm thinking that this is a problem that the tractor has had for some time as when we bought it at the sale, it had fresh oil and a brand new filter and the entire tractor was spotless (can you saw wash off the gunk and change the oil anyone????) Although, it did have one tiny trickle of oil running down the manifold and onto the oil filter.... I assumed someone had dumped oil down the exhaust to winterize the tractor and then it got blown out when the first fired it up.. Now I can see that it's an ongoing deal, not a one time happening.
Where should I check first? One guy told me it sounds like broken rings, but it starts real good, even down into the low 30's without being plugged in. Exhaust valve seals maybe?
Thanks!
