There is a ball bearing inside that gear, and a snap ring holding it on the shaft. When I worked on mine I had the tractor split. I removed the lower frame casting so I could get in there to remove the nut and the foward gear on the lower shaft. Then I removed the above mentioned snap ring and gear through the front hole.
