One reason is it keeps the belt tracking straight. With such a long belt, if one side is just a tiny fraction of an inch longer than the other side, it will walk off the pulleys, by putting a half twist in will keep it centered. Another reason is to operate the attachment in the correct direction. The half twist will reverse the rotation of the attachment vs, the pulley on the tractor.
