Well ... I'm certainly getting well acquainted with working on this old tractor! Still can't get it to start. I did discover the battery was installed backwards (it was in with negative to ground -- it should be + to ground). Also, the coil was reversed.

After fixing those problems it still wouldn't go and it was cranking very slowly, even after an overnight battery charge. I started cleaning up battery & starter connections and decided to replace both battery connectors. It cranks much better now, but still no start. I can smell gas from the carb after cranking some, so it appears to be getting fuel.

I wondered if the voltage regulator was replaced when the last owner did the battery and coil. He could have put in a negative ground V/R. It appears to be relatively new, but I can't tell anything more by just looking at it. Anyway, I don't think the wrong V/R would affect the starting problem -- wouldn't that only affect battery charging?

So, I'm guessing the problem is electrical, but haven't got a good idea of what to try next. Do you have any ideas?
Thanks, Jay
