If its a loud backfire, just like a gun shot, then I would suspect the condenser. If it misses and then pops back through the carb, it needs fuel. Often the problem is fuel delivery and not just the float and needle. So what I do is put out the cigar and use all the regular precautions about handling gas, like getting the thing out of the barn, and I shut off the fuel and drain the bowl on the carb. Then I hold the can right there and turn the fuel on and let it run for a while to make sure there is enough flow. No clog in the sediment bowl, no clog in the fuel tank outlet, no clogged vent in the cap. Check the cap by loosening it while you watch the flow. If it looks like there's plenty of flow, then I would pull the bowl and check the float level. General rule of thumb on the float level is that the float shuts off the flow when the seam in the float is parallel with the gasket surface. Perfectionists will need the exact float level setting. The only other thing is that your low speed adjustment may be set perfectly, but a small piece of crud could be lodged under the needle. This happens to my old Harley while underway and I reach down and turn the screw in enough to dislodge whatever is in the way and turn it back where it was. It always seems to clear itself.
