In Reply to: John Deere Model A flywheel comes loose posted by Doug Carpenter on Wednesday, November 29, 2006:
Is this the flywheel with a big stamped steel nut that tightens the wheel to the splined crank? With two bolts in the flywheel opposite each other? I had to take out the two bolts and make sure you can turn the nuts all the way until they bottom. Once you know the bolts are in good shape, the way I did it was to tighten the big nut first, the torque the two bolts to clamp the flywheel to the spline. Check a manual for torque spec. If the flywheel is allowed to 'clunk' back and forth on the spline every time the engine fires, the nut will loosen very quickly.
