rich4 is exactly right. When a moving blade hits an immovable object, something has to give. You would rather it be a pin or clutch than the PTO shaft or worse internally on the tractor. The preference would be a clutch that will slip and continue to operate when the object has passed. The pin works, but you'll be done mowing until you replace it.
