The PTO shaft that goes to the mower gearbox could have a shear pin connecting the shaft to the gearbox or instead a larger clutch type connection that will slip under heavier than normal loads. For protection from mower impact damage I think the shear pin would break and immediately stop the mower, A slip clutch may protect the tractor and mower from overload by slipping the clutch. These scenarios are only viable when you hit a rock /hidden object etc. My tractor had neither and when I hit a rock I bent one of my blades. Luckily no other damage occurred.
