Hi,
The shift lever only has three positions. Number 1. all the way forward, 2. middle (The middle position is always neutral), 3. all the way back.
The knob on top of the lever turns, and has several notches. You use these notches to select the gears.
Do not try to shift, without the tractor stopped completely and the clutch pushed in. Trying to shift while the tractor is rolling or without the clutch disengaged could damage the transmission, or bend the shifting fork inside the transmission.
You select low or high range with the knob turned all the way to the left. All the way forward is high range and all the way back is low range. One of these ranges is always selected, even when the transmission is in neutral.
Just as a general rule you will do all of your hard pulling and heavy work in low range, and do you lighter pulling or traveling from one place to the other in high range ( I will probably get some backlash on this).
When you are ready to begin, put the lever in neutral, turn the knob all the way to the left and move the lever forward or back for the correct range. As I said one of these ranges is always selected so if you are certain what range you left it in, you can skip this part.
When you are in the correct range with the lever in neutral, push the clutch in, turn the knob to select the gear you want to use, move the lever into the correct position (forward or back), and release the clutch. You are on your way.
With the knob turned all the way to the right, pull the lever all the way back for reverse or all the way up for forward.
You should have a decal that shows the lever and knob positions for each gear. If you don't have this decal or plate, email me at and I will send you the gear pattern for my 505.
To recap: You select the range you want to run in first (low or high) and then select the gear you want to run in. That’s it.
Bobby
