Common things to look for:
1. Water contamination in the oil will look milkish and sometimes foamy
2. No oil at all
3. Contamination in the tranny oil.
4. Low compression indicating the possibility of all kinds of engine problems from simple to expensive.
5. Hidden cracks in the block from water freezing with no antifreeze, but with no radiator, you might escape that.
6. Spark plugs siezed in the block
7. Mouse damage to wiring
8. Crud in the fuel tank that will plug up fuel lines, and the carb
9. Worn wheel bearings
10. Tranny troubles, including but not limited to worn gears, gears with missing teeth, worn out clutch, broken clutch parts, and hunks of mysterious metal in the bottom of the tranny case.
11. My all time favorite, old farmer engineered cobbled repairs using anything at hand (except the correct parts) to get the tractor running. These repairs can be spotted usually by the use of pluming pipe, bits of wire, duct tape, welds that look like big globs, pieces of wood, and the occasional cloth turniquet. I've even seen clothes pins used to hold stuff together.
