Kubota problems – Smoking Mower & Blades Won’t Turn

This conversation illustrates the critical importance of basic maintenance. A little grease up front can prevent a lot of trouble down the line!

Al I bought a new Kubota L3400DT-1F with a Woods rotary cutter today. I got on the thing for the first time this afternoon and after about two minutes the mower began smoking. Now the blades won’t turn at all. Does anyone have any idea what could have happened?
Road Runner I had a WOODS cutter and I had belt problems right off the bat with it. You have several grease fittings that have to be lubed with bearing grease NOT CHASSIS LUBE, before you use it. At least mine did. Yours should be under warranty, just haul it back and insist on another one. Or they can repair that one. You will find that you must lube all fittings and wheels before using it each time or it will go to the mower in the sky place real quick.
Sam You’re right R Runner, it sounds like some bearings went out and locked up and smoked the belt.
Smokin Dog Sounds like it’s not Kubota problems but Woods Cutter problems instead. I had one of those things, a five footer, You do have to lube the heck out of them with a good grade bearing grease, or they will turn on you. I replace mine with a Bush Hog rotary cutter and it does a great job, but you have to use that grease gun each time before using it also.
Al thank you for the insight. What kind of grease would you recommend?
Smokin Dog Just get a good grade of wheel bearing grease or you can use the type they use on boat trailer wheels. Get the type in a tube so you can install it into a grease gun. You will have to have a good grease gun, and it takes a lot of the grease, the wheels will take more than the rest of the mower. They only have bushings and wear out fast, the dirt and dust get into the wheel bushing easly. Any Auto parts store should be able to tell you the best quality they stock. The bearings on the hubs for the blades get a lot of abuse just using it normal so I would get grease with a high temperature rating. Some of the tubes will say for disc brakes, that would be a high temp lube.
Road Runner All the above sounds correct, but the dealer is suppose to do a dealer prep on all your new equipment to be sure it’s ready for you, and they are suppose to be sure you understand how it works, the dealer is at fault, sounds like they didn’t do their job or the mower would have gone out with them.
Joe I dont know if this is your problem, but this is what happen to me. I have a Kubota L34OO DT with a Woods RD60 finishing mower. When restarting the mower after use when belt was hot, the belt would jump off one of the blade pullies and smoke the belt. This happen to me the first time I used the mower. The dealer order a bracket installed near the pully to keep the belt from flexing off on start up. New belt and bracket were under waranty.

I do not know about that specific tractor but I would put money on the blades being held in one place and this caused a belt to burn through. check the belt and see if the blades move freely. Remember that this part of a tractor can be dangerous, you must be sure there is no way the blades can be powered while you are working on them.

Hi just wondering would anyone be able to advise on the following problem. I cut the lawns with a kubota diesel mower 1600, its old but pretty good. When ticking over it is running smoothly but once the pto and cutting blades are engaged and cutting grass the power dies down and it seems like the machine is going to cut out, then it revs up to its normal running speed before dying down again. What does this sound like.

Had same problem with new Kubota L2800 and Bush Hog finishing mower. Mower stopped turning after 15 minutes use. NO GEAR OIL IN MOWER GEARBOX FROM FACTORY. I called Kubota dealer who was supposed to have checked it. Thheir answer, “sorry” Luck for me it didn’t do any damage or at least any that has shown up yet.
